When I reached adolescence I began to identify as an artist and turned my back on “hard” subjects like math. I created this “trinomial tower” a few years ago as an attempt to face my fear of math. The trinomial cube - along with so many other Montessori materials - appeals to me emotionally and aesthetically; I wanted to create something structured, but also just enjoy playing with the shapes. By skewing the face of the trinomial cube, the 2D grid easily becomes a 3D scaffold. I began to play with the patterns and spatial relationships - not in an algebraic way - but in a sensorial way. Producing this print was a way for me to reconnect with my mathematical mind and remember the joy of discovery.
